ZLW/IMA - Center for Learning and Knowledge Management and Department of Information Management in Mechanical Engineering - Germany

The Center for Learning and Knowledge Management and Department of Information Management in Mechanical Engineering is a main interdisciplinary research institute of RWTH Aachen University carrying out the work in AsIsKnown. The institute will coordinate and manage AsIsKnown (WP1). The IMA part of the institute will lead WP7 (Back office Ordering System for semantic web services) which constitutes one element of the technology baseline and development. The ZLW/IMA will ensure a highly integrative information and knowledge transfer as well as the scientific and technological management and controlling within AsIsKnown.

The RWTH Aachen University, established in 1870, is divided into ten faculties. Their approximately 27,000 students are enrolled in 85 courses of study. The proportion of foreigners (19 percent) substantiates the university’s international orientation. Every year about 2,700 graduates and as doctoral graduates leave the university. Approximately 400 professors as well as 2,000 academic and 2,000 non-academic colleagues work at the RWTH Aachen University. The university budget amounts to approximately 500 million Euros — of which 142 million Euros are third-party expenditures. Moreover, 14 special fields of research, two interdisciplinary working groups, five graduate colleges, 15 competence centres, ten ancillary institutes with strong industrial alignment illustrate the university’s considerable research potential.

The interdisciplinary research institute ZLW/IMA combines expertise in the fields of learning and knowledge management, change management, software engineering and process management. The ZLW/IMA will bring in its broadly scientifically based experience in co-ordinating large-scale projects, e.g. the EU-funded projects SAIL or the German leading large-scale research and business project SENEKA (22 Mio €, 5 years, 30 partners, 40 international associated partners). The interaction between the various components of AsIsKnown will be managed and linked by approved practice-orientated management tools which have been developed and field-tested in these projects. The ZLW/IMA employs approximately 35 full time staff members (mainly scientists) and about 65 part-time members (50% male, 50% female).
